The Grass Lake Community Wellness Initiative (GLCWI) was founded after several local students suffered ill effects from substance abuse. The coalition came together to combat prescription and opiate drug abuse in the area. GLCWI was a success from the first forum, as community members packed the auditorium to hear Mike Hirst speak about the death of his son Andy. Hirst spoke of Andy’s battles with substance abuse, how the Grass Lake community could combat dealers, and help family, friends and neighbors dealing with substance abuse issues.
Since then, GLWCI has broadened their mission without abandoning the original premise. Since 2011 they’ve been constructing a comprehensive wellness plan addressing substance abuse, and incorporating projects to help residents eat better, move more and connect with others in healthy ways.
