5HF Major Coverage: Silver Maples Announces Change in Ownership

 

Walk to School Wednesday’s return to Chelsea on Wednesday, September 13th!! The Walk to School program is led by Chelsea District Library, Silver Solutions of Chelsea, and 5 Healthy Towns Foundation.
Students and parents headed to South Meadows Elementary School and Beach Middle School meet in the Chelsea District Library Reading Garden at 7:25 am and leave for school at 7:30 am.
Students and parents headed to North Creek Elementary School meet at the north entrance of Clocktower Commons (the entrance used for Chelsea Hearth and Fire and Physical Therapy of Chelsea) at 7:25 am and leave for school at 7:35 am

5 Healthy Towns Foundation is now accepting proposals for regional interventions that address isolation, food access, and/or physical activity opportunities in the 5 Healthy Towns service area.  Up to $500,000 over the next three years will be made available for the RFP process. The 5HF service area includes the populations within the Chelsea, Dexter, Grass Lake, Manchester, and Stockbridge School Districts. Click here for more information.

Every day has the potential to be an adventure and these days we find ourselves in the middle of a true adventure. Every one of us has decisions to make. We need to weigh risk and benefit for all our activities – grocery shopping, family visits, lunch dates and more.

Some of us find ourselves in a position to make decisions for the benefit others. For instance, local hospital administrators must care for their patients, employees and visitors. We shouldn’t envy them their challenge. It is unlikely they will make everyone (perhaps even anyone) happy.

There is plenty of expert information. Sometimes experts forget that most of us aren’t microbiologists. Without their basic understanding regarding the behavior of germs (including viruses), their comments can be distressing. While virus behavior can’t always be predicted, we know the coronavirus (COVID-19) will succumb to most over the counter soaps and disinfectants. That’s good news. And, although the vast majority of the population has no established immunity (resistance) to COVID-19, most of us will be able to withstand the illness without consequence.

There are exceptions. People older than 70 or with existing illnesses like asthma or any other lung illness, heart disease, diabetes, etc., should be extremely careful. The same for people who smoke. The rest of us can think about how we can help them. Delivering groceries or picking up prescriptions is one offer we can make.

Here’s something important to consider. Our immune system, the part of us that prevents illness and makes it less serious if we become ill, is ‘pumped up’ when we are physically active. We should all find ways to keep moving. Going outside is perfectly safe.

Immune systems work best if we’re happy, too. And most of us are happy in the company of people we care about. If you shouldn’t go out or have guests, find other ways to connect. Use the phone, Zoom, Facetime or other electronic communication to stay in touch with friends and relatives. If video communication is a new idea, ask someone to help you figure it out. Once you do it a few times it will be easy. Personal interactions with people you care for and who care for you is essential when we are practicing ‘social distancing’. It will help us all resist infection if we demonstrate care and experience being cared for. You can also try laughing out loud – at something or nothing at all.

Of course, we’ll feel better if we limit exposure to sensationalizing television, as hard as it to look away, sometimes.

Lastly, wash your hands, everyone. Twenty seconds each time.

We are open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and have game night each Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Ping Pong Night on the 2nd and 4th Monday of each month.  Lunch is available each weekday at noon for a suggested donation of $2.50. We are able to provide low-cost, nutritionally balanced, tasty lunches thanks to our partnership with the Jackson County Department on Aging.  If you would like to join us for lunch, please call the Senior Center at 517-522-8466 or 734.475.9242 at least one day in advance to register.

Palmer Commons

For over 25 years the Chelsea Farmers Market has brought high-quality food and artisan products to the Chelsea community. This season promises several new vendors along with the return of musical entertainment and new events to engage the visitor, both young and old.

The Market offers seasonal vegetables and fruits of all types, meat and poultry, eggs, honey, maple syrup, coffee, a wide variety of breads and bakery items, herbs, hand crafted artisan products such as jewelry, birdhouses, body care and pottery. Organic and naturally-grown offerings available.

The market will be offering the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which allows Bridge Cards to be used at the market information table in exchange for Bridge Card Tokens to purchase food items.  We are also thrilled to participate in the Double Up Food Bucks program, that matches every dollar of SNAP with a FREE dollar to be spent on fresh fruits and veggies.

Yoga in the Park

8:00 am, Mill Creek Park

Yoga in the Park is a collaborative program with contributions from the Dexter Wellness Coalition, 5 Healthy Towns Foundation and the Dexter Wellness Center. The program is designed to provide free weekly yoga sessions led by a certified yoga instructor on the banks of Mill Creek in downtown Dexter.

Participants enjoy the inclusive nature of the program that is geared towards a wide spectrum of abilities and fitness levels. Yoga in the Park is held in a beautiful setting and provides a unique opportunity for yoga beginners or the yogis with years of practice under their belt.

A free Yoga on the Lawn class will be offered through a joint effort of the 5 Healthy Towns Foundations, Chelsea Wellness Center, and Chelsea District Library on Saturday mornings beginning June 3- August 19 from 10:00-11:00 am to support aspects of the 5 Healthy Towns Foundation’s mission to move more and make healthy connections with others. The free yoga class will be open to community members. If there is severe weather or rain class will be cancelled.

Free outdoor yoga at Grass Lake County Park Saturdays in June, July and August at 10 am.  Sponsored by Grass Lake Community Wellness Initiative and 5 Healthy Towns Foundation.  Open to all ages and abilities.  Please bring your own beach towel/yoga mat and water.
